A group of elementary school girls learning about the Gordie Howe International Bridge

Elementary school students watch a presentation about the Gordie Howe International Bridge

Over October and November 2019, WDBA held three educational presentations and bridge building activity sessions about the Gordie Howe International Bridge project for United Way’s WE-STEAM program in west Windsor.

WE-STEAM provides innovative and engaging Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) programming to after-school programs and summer camps in Windsor-Essex County priority neighbourhoods at no cost to participants.

Elementary school students gathered at St. James and Malborough schools, along with the Advocating Young Minds After-School Program to learn about the design of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, environmental aspects and careers associated with the project. Following the presentations, students were split into groups to work on a bridge planning activity where they design and name a bridge of their own while managing costs and external variables.

In addition to the WE-STEAM program, WDBA and Bridging North America attended the annual Build A Dream event hosted at the Ciociaro Club in Windsor on November 7th for female high school students seeking careers in skilled trades. We have also participated on multiple Workforce WindsorEssex career panel discussions hosted at local high schools.

As construction progresses the project team will continue public outreach, generating buzz about this once in a lifetime infrastructure project. To request a presentation please visit /en/outreach-requests.
