The Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan includes innovative initiatives that provide opportunities for local community members to
contribute to the project in a meaningful way
The Community Organization Investment initiative will provide funding of $50,000 (CDN) in Canada and the US to community
organizations serving Sandwich/west Windsor or Delray/Southwest Detroit residents.
As part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, five pedestrian bridges crossing Interstate-75 will be built to
provide safe access to services within the community.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge project requires significant construction activity, including the demolition and
removal of existing infrastructure, reconstruction of select roadways and bridges, and construction of new project
infrastructure.
The new crossing is of vital importance to the economic prosperity of communities and businesses on both
sides of the border and is expected to create thousands of construction jobs
The Canadian and US Ports of Entry (POE) will include several buildings, canopies, roadways, parking lots and bridge ramps. All
of these structures will require a solid base on which they can be built.
The aggressive construction schedule for the Gordie Howe International Bridge project will continue through
fall 2020 into winter 2020-2021. Construction is ongoing simultaneously throughout the four project
components
A key project
element is the inclusion of a Community Benefits Plan which includes the Workforce Development and
Participation Strategy and the Neighbourhood Infrastructure Strategy.
