On June 10, 2024, crews installed the temporary bracing pieces that connect the Canadian and US sides of the Gordie Howe International Bridge over the Detroit River. With this step taken, the bridge has officially become an international crossing that requires temporary Port of Entry (POE) facilities for border agencies.

Community-based education and programming, tourism, musical performances and physical recreation are a few of the focus areas being funded through this year’s Community Organization Investment, an initiative of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan.  

As construction progresses on the Gordie Howe International Bridge, new elements are regularly added during construction such as stay cables, beams and girders. But recently, crews removed pieces instead.  

Women working on the Gordie Howe International Bridge play a valuable role in every aspect of the day-to-day operations of the project from engineering, human resources, government relations and communications to onsite construction.  Their contributions and hard work are a crucial component to the success of this once-in-a-generation undertaking. 

In November 2023, two Gordie Howe International Bridge workers rescued four members of the public from a capsized boat in the frigid waters of the Detroit River. Now, their life-saving efforts are being recognized with Fluor’s Silver Medallion of Safety.

Get your hiking shoes out and your bikes tuned up. The Gordie Howe International Bridge will be the first international border crossing to join the Trans Canada Trail - a 28,000 km trail network across the country.

Thirteen new initiatives are being added to the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan. Representing an investment of $2.6 million (CDN), the new initiatives will bring immediate and lasting benefits to the project host communities of Sandwich/west Windsor and Delray/Southwest Detroit.

In December, the Canadian tower on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project reached its full height of 220 metres/722 feet marking a historic moment in the project’s construction.
