On November 24, 2023, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team was recognized with a prestigious Brownie Award for its work redeveloping and revitalizing brownfield sites. 

On October 21 and November 4, 2023, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project team hosted community appreciation breakfasts for the residents of Delray/Southwest Detroit and Sandwich/west Windsor to celebrate five years of construction and thank the communities for their ongoing support. 

The Windsor-Detroit area played an important role for thousands of freedom-seekers leaving the United States during the 1800s. Travelling the Underground Railroad, many formerly enslaved people crossed the Detroit River in their quest for freedom for themselves and their offspring. The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is pleased to announce the artist selected for the Commemorative Art Commission recognizing the Underground Railroad. Jordan Sook, a contemporary mixed media artist, will develop the commission.    

The story of the Gordie Howe International Bridge is a series of chapters highlighting the progress we’ve made to date and our deeply rooted connection with our host communities of Windsor and Detroit. Both communities play an important and vital role in our success and are interwoven into the history of this groundbreaking bi-national infrastructure project. 

Malden Park is getting an exciting new permanent addition – an observation area on the highest hill in Essex County so you can watch construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. 

As work progresses at the Canadian and US Ports of Entry and the Michigan Interchange, Bridging North America has integrated a unique material called Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) blocks as part of their construction technique. While they will not be visible once work is complete, these geofoam blocks play an important role in construction. 

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project team is excited to announce the reopening of the fourth and final road bridge reconstructed as part of the Michigan Interchange activities. 

The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) acknowledged the Gordie Howe International Bridge project with its inaugural 2023 Brownfields and Infrastructure Phoenix Award on August 9, 2023, at the Huntington Place Convention Centre in Detroit. This premier award recognizes brownfield redevelopment projects in the United States that overcome barriers and infrastructure challenges and positively impact surrounding communities.

Substantial work was completed on the road deck before bridge deck work began on the Canadian and US sides. Construction of the bridge and road decks occurs as crews continue to build up the massive towers located on both shores of the Detroit River, set to reach a final height of 220 metres/722 feet later this year.
