About 250 trees found new homes in Southwest Detroit following a free tree giveaway on April 10, 2021. The giveaway was hosted by the Greening of Detroit, with funding from the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan.

“We are happy to support Greening of Detroit with this effort to increase trees in Delray and Southwest Detroit,” said Heather Grondin, Vice-President Communications and Stakeholder Relations, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. “The trees will help residents enjoy a bit of nature in their own yards.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event was hosted as a drive-thru to allow people to safely pick up their trees. Residents were able to select a three-gallon potted tree in one of five native species.  Greening of Detroit staff helped residents select the most appropriate tree for their property’s size and sunlight situation, and provided an information kit to help residents successfully plant and care for their new trees.

A second tree giveaway supported by the project’s Community Benefits Plan will take place in 2024.
