On October 5, 2018, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and Bridging North America celebrated the official start of construction on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project. The $5.7 project which includes the Canadian and US Ports of Entry, the bridge and Michigan Interchange, will be constructed over 74 months and open to traffic by the end of 2024.

Joining in the celebrations was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, François-Philippe Champagne, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Canadian Ambassador to the United States, David MacNaughton, Elder Erick Isaac from Walpole Island First Nation and many other supporters of the project.  

We were also joined by students from the Construction Academy of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board. These students are well on their way to obtaining their level one apprenticeship papers while they earn their high school diplomas.

In addition students from the St. Clair College media and journalism program were on hand helping capture this moment in time.  

Following the media event, hundreds of people gathered for a community celebration marking the start of construction at Senator David A. Croll Park, in downtown Windsor.

Gordie Howe International Bridge workers recognized for lifesaving actions

In November 2023, two Gordie Howe International Bridge workers rescued four members of the public from a capsized boat in the frigid waters of the Detroit River. Now, their life-saving efforts are being recognized with Fluor’s Silver Medallion of Safety.
