As part of Early Works construction, existing utilities, such as telephone, cable, and electricity transmission lines, located within the footprint of the Canadian Port of Entry (POE), will need to be relocated. Some utilities will be moved onto hydro poles in the right-of-way along the new perimeter access road (PAR), and others will be relocated in designated underground utility corridors throughout the Canadian POE.

Worker performing utility line maintenance In February 2016, municipal utility crews installed 27 utility poles in the right-of-way along Broadway Street. Additional pole installation will continue along the PAR right-of-way as construction of PAR progresses. Utility relocation is necessary because utilities cannot cross over the Canadian POE. Relocation of these utilities will allow routine maintenance, future upgrades to these services and not impede traffic at the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The utility relocation work will be done in stages over this year in coordination with various utility companies at the Canadian POE to ensure that services to existing customers are not disrupted.
