With a variety of recent and upcoming achievements on the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) and Bridging North America (BNA) look to celebrate with residents and thank them for their support and patience over the last five years of construction by hosting two community appreciation breakfasts. The events take place on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at Clark Park in Detroit and Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Sandwich Teen Action Group in Windsor. Final Steps in Gordie Howe International Bridge Tower Construction Underway

Those watching construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge will see major changes at the US bridge tower over the next four weeks. The last concrete pour for the sloped architectural heads at the top of the pylon head is now complete and the US tower has reached its full height of 220 metres/722 feet. Crews will now begin removing the jump form system which includes artwork by local Detroit based artist Roberto Villalobos. These last steps are anticipated to begin at the Canadian bridge tower in September.

Statement by Charl van Niekerk, Chief Executive Officer, Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority

As part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, we are reconstructing a three-kilometre stretch of Sandwich Street from south of the Rosedale Avenue roundabout past Ojibway Parkway to McKee Avenue. This project, worth approximately $12 million, is being completed in three phases with the goal of achieving full completion in 2024. To deliver these much-needed improvements, road closures and detours will be required. That starts with the first phase of work – from Ojibway Parkway to Chappell Avenue – anticipated to begin on September 5, 2023. We have heard, over the last week, feedback from members of the Sandwich community regarding the construction approach that would see a full closure of this 500-metre length of Sandwich Street and the construction approach that would see one lane open in one direction.
