The last concrete pour for the US bridge tower is complete and it has reached its full height of 220 metres/722 feet. Crews are removing the jump form system. This work is anticipated to begin at the Canadian bridge tower in September.

Through the project’s Community Benefits Plan Neighbourhood Infrastructure Strategy, an observation area in Malden Park is being constructed to provide an attractive, safe location for residents, students and tourists to observe construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

The first phase of Sandwich Street reconstruction is now underway. As part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge project, just over three kilometres of Sandwich Street in Windsor, Ontario will be reconstructed by Bridging North America. The Sandwich Street reconstruction work area stretches from south of the Rosedale Avenue roundabout past Ojibway Parkway to McKee Road. Once complete, the City of Windsor will be responsible for maintaining the street. This work includes a number of improvements for the area.

In July 2023, the Community Organization Investment will divide $200,000 (CDN) to seven organizations in Canada and seven in the US.

Multiple art commissions have been identified for inclusion into the project as part of the Visual Art Program. This includes a stand-alone Indigenous art commission to be installed at the Canadian Port of Entry. Following an extensive selection process that began in 2018, artist Michael Belmore has been identified as the successful candidate.

The bridge towers continue to climb as single pylons, with the Canadian and US towers both standing over 190 metres/625 feet tall. The project team has approximately seven cement pours left on each tower until they reach their final heights of 220 metres/722 feet later this year.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is the largest and most ambitious infrastructure project along the Canada-United States border. With four main components including the bridge, ports of entry in Canada and the US and the Michigan Interchange (I-75), the complex project requires a high degree of planning, attention to detail and innovative design and building techniques. From conception to completion, engineers play an integral role and are involved in every aspect of development.

To commemorate the area’s role on the Underground Railroad and the contributions its travellers provided to the region, the Gordie Howe International Bridge project will include artwork at the Canadian Port of Entry recognizing this important part of history.
